9/11 shocked the world but what happened after that shooked Afghanistan. The group who was behind the attack was al Qaeda, which had roots from Taliban and its one of the mighty leader was Osama Bin Laden. At that time, George.W.Bush was the one who was holding the presidency in America. Within a week after the attack, George.W.Bush ordered the invasion in Afghanistan. Their aim was to demolish Taliban and take revenge of 9/11.

At that time, Afghanistan was controlled by Taliban completely. Within some time, American and military of NATO gained most of the territory in Afghanistan and decided to rebuild and unite the whole nation. This was not that simple as Afghanistan was of various different communities and different ethnic groups. Many of the communities were completely isolated and had not roadway to them. So, the American government decided to reconstruct the project designed by Soviets in 1960 for Afghanistan which was not able to complete due to wars in between. This project was about a road which can cover the whole nation. They named this road as Ring road. It was covering all four major cities- Kabul, Khandhar, Herat, Mazar-I-Sharif and was 3,200 KM long. It was projected to be of 1.5 billion dollars. A major contribution was of the USA and Asian development bank, other contributions were by Iran, Saudi Arabia, Japan and World Bank. Along with this, many other roads were also planned which were small and were connecting country in small spam.

Everything was going very fine until in 2003, America invaded Iraq. When America invaded Iraq, Afghanistan became a second priority and all the major war generals, diplomats, and fundings were diverted to Iraq. Then after, Taliban made a comeback and started taking its grounds back. From 2004 to 2009, Taliban controlled a huge amount of territory back and had a drastic change. They targeted the project which was in progress and made a lot difficult to be completed. They were having a comeback because they were familiar with the land and having ambush activities. A huge amount of money was spent on security. Elections were going to be there in 2009 and Barack Obama took advantage of this and said that war in Afghanistan a ”war to be won”. In all his speeches, he was making statements like if he got in power, the war in Afghanistan will be over with successive victory. And he won the elections.

After that, he sent 100,000 troops in Afghanistan calling it a plan by name ”surge”. But his all strategies were failed and he soon understood and said that war in Afghanistan is something like that people should carry. So he made agreement calling it historic between USA and Afghanistan. In the agreement, USA claimed to pay most the bills in the war but will bring back their soldiers and he announced a decline in a number of their soldiers in Afghanistan. From then conditions started getting worse as the activities lead by Taliban in Afghanistan rose dramatically. Now an important question is that from where do Taliban gets funding. First of all, many reports accuse Pakistani army of their fundings. Secondly, Afghanistan is the largest producer for opium. Opium is the main ingredient for the production of drug heroin. 80% of opium in the world is grown in Afghanistan. Taliban claims all the mainlands where Opium can be grown.

For many years, Donald Trump always used his favorite social media platform Twitter to express his views on Afghanistan. He always urged that war in Afghanistan makes no sense and all of the soldiers deployed in Afghanistan should return back.

After he won last elections, He told his new strategy on 21st of October in a military base at Virginia where he made three clear points. These points were far more different for what he was saying for years.

• Increase in number of soldiers from 12,000 to 16,000
• More pressure on Pakistan
• Fight against terrorism and corruption in Afghanistan will be battled.

These points were far more similar of Obama. The interesting thing to watch is that what his strategy will do of 16,000 soldiers where Obama’s 140,000 were not able to do.Number of Taliban soldiers and it’s allies had rose from 10,000 to 60,000 in last decade. Many former general and war experts are in doubt that maybe war in Afghanistan is a never ending and USA can’t win.

This war resulted in complete destruction of Afghanistan. Huge funding by America and NATO have been made about more than 3 billion dollars and Ring Road is still not completed. According to a report by CNN, from 2001 to 2016, more than 31,000 civilians have lost their lives more than 30,000 troops of Afghanistan have died. More than 3,500 soldiers of the USA and its allies have also lost their lives. This war took place under 3 presidents and took 16 years and is still going on with full potential.

In Afghanistan, we helped to liberate an oppressed people. And we will continue helping them secure their country, rebuild their society, and educate all their children, boys and girls.
